Background mapping options

We are working on improving what layers can be imported to form the background map in Anaqsim. Currently we only have .dxf files. What other options do users think would be useful?

I’ll pass along a request from Jon who asked about overlaying site/regional maps in Anaqsim as images (e.g. PNG file). I know that Visual Modflow allowed for image overlays but the image required a 3-point geo-reference (provided manually by the user) in order to pin the image in the correct location and at the correct scale. Is that the general approach that Anaqsim could take?

I think that should be something we can replicate. There are some constraints based on the current mapping/plotting package we use, but it sounds feasible. I think the user would have to give coordinates for one of the corners, and a height/width to get the scale right.

Would it be possible to import / insert a file type or image format that is already geo-referenced? Something like a standard GIS shapefile or a geoTIFF? Shapefile would get my vote?

I expect a geoTiff is going to be easier than shapefiles, but I can see the advantages of being able to get shapefiles in as well. I’ll take a look at what we think might be possible. Thanks for the feedback.
